Defending the Constitutional State

Statement from the deputy director of Stiftung Forum Recht on the current political debate

The Stiftung Forum Recht advocates broad social engagement with the constitutional state and democracy, and an open, diverse and liberal society.

It is encouraging that hundreds of thousands of people across the country are taking to the streets in defence of these beliefs, speaking out and standing up for the constitutional state.

The shocking reports on the Potsdam meeting in November 2023 make it clear that the ideas spread there are incompatible with the principles of a constitutional democracy as it has been practiced and valued throughout Germany for many decades.

Those involved in the meeting must have known that their vision of the future is not compatible with Germany’s Basic Law. However, it is striking that they still want to create the appearance of legitimacy and legality for their plans. At the heart of these plans is the outrageous idea of creating a social climate of systematic discrimination and marginalisation of people from migrant backgrounds and people with differing world views.

Such visions of the future are not in line with our constitution and the constitutional state. We at Stiftung Forum Recht are therefore all the more committed to providing opportunities and occasions for debate on the rule of law in order to raise awareness of it, to examine it closely, and to listen when attempts are made to act against our constitutional state and interfere with the foundations of our democracy. The constitutional state depends on the commitment of each and every individual to make it strong in the face of attacks.

Stiftung Forum Recht offers a range of outreach services, educational activities and programmes that give people the opportunity to learn more about the constitutional state and to get involved themselves. The aim and purpose of the foundation is to create space for a positive debate on the constitutional state and facilitate constructive dialogue.

Its mission and existence are more relevant and important than ever.
