Artist talk with Yves Mettler about the work "Europaplatz (Recht sprechen)"
Yves Mettler provides insights into how the artistic-legal research project came about
On the occasion of the Europe Day 2023 and the Karlsruhe Europe Week developed by the Swiss artist Yves Mettler together with the French EU lawyer Antoine Bailleux the work "Europaplatz (Speak law)", an artistic-legal research project.
Based on court rulings by the European Court of Justice, the artwork traces diverse but also contradictory images of Europe. For Mettler, these judgments - in addition to their legal function - can also be seen as a "recording device" of societal negotiation processes.
We used the Opening events in Karlsruhe on May 8 and 9, 2023, to ask Yves Mettler a few questions about his work and artistic activities in public space. See here the Interview.
Until the May 30, 2023 the work could be discovered at nine stations in Karlsruhe city center. Colored wooden steles with an explanatory text invited visitors to engage with specific judgments of the European Court of Justice and the narratives shaped by them. A theatrical podcast complements the objects. All Podcasts are still available in German and French on archive.org to listen to:
