„Quite Urban!“: The Forum Recht Foundation Launches City Tours on the Rule of Law in Karlsruhe

Starting Thursday, June 13, 2024, the Forum Recht Foundation will host a free monthly city tour through Karlsruhe focusing on the law. Both tourists and Karlsruhe residents can learn a lot of new things about the „Residence of the Law.“.

Karlsruhe. What are the tasks of the Federal Court of Justice? Why do beehives appear in the German Civil Code? And to which extent does the law have impact on our everyday lives?

These and many other questions are answered by the free city tour „Recht stadtlich! A Walk Through Karlsruhe,“ a new addition to the offerings of the Forum Recht Foundation. Starting immediately, the tour will take place on the second Thursday of every month at 5:00 p.m. On Thursday, June 13, 2024, the tour will begin for the first time in front of the Tourist Information Office on Marktplatz.

Exciting for both Karlsruhe residents and tourists alike

The walking tours are aimed at anyone who wants to discover a new side of Karlsruhe and learn more about the role of law in everyday life. „While we do touch on the city’s history and architecture during ‘Recht stadtlich!“, but at its core, it’s about something else,„ explains Thomas Stelzl, head of the Education and Outreach Department at the Forum Recht Foundation. “That’s why the city tour is just as exciting for longtime residents as it is for people visiting the city for the first time.”

The walking tour showcases Karlsruhe’s curiosities related to the law, scandals both big and small, and fascinating legal cases—from the most progressive constitution to criminal cases, „Recht stadtlich!“ has it all. „Many places throughout the city show us that we all come into contact with the law every day—and that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. During the city tour, various—and sometimes quite amusing—stories illustrate this point. Our goal is to make the supposedly abstract and inaccessible topic of law tangible for everyone,“ emphasizes Thomas Stelzl.

Which way do I go from here?

The tour starts at the tourist information office on the market square. Participants should enjoy a walk of approximately 2.8 kilometers. The route takes you past the castle and the Constitutional Court, then by the State Mint and the Prinz-Max-Palais to the Federal Court of Justice. The tour ends at the offices of the Forum Recht Foundation at Karlstor.

The tour is conducted in German and lasts about two hours. The route is designed to be accessible. The Forum Recht Foundation will announce any weather-related changes on its website and through its social media channels.

Participation in the tour is free of charge. Registration is not required. Special tour dates for groups can be arranged by contacting the Forum Recht Foundation.
