Who How What is Family? Living together between law and reality
Family law is one of the areas of law that reaches particularly deep into people's lives. It regulates the legal relationships of marriage and kinship and covers issues ranging from parent-child relationships, custody and maintenance to civil status law. These are complex legal issues that are associated with strong emotions for many people. This time, the Stiftung Forum Recht is discussing these issues with experts in family law in its "Let's Talk About Law" series.
Leipzig. The Stiftung Forum Recht in cooperation with the German Association of Women Lawyers (djb) on Wednesday, the October 08, starting at 19:00 is hosting another edition of the "Let's Talk About Law" discussion series at its Leipzig office. The guests are the family law experts Caroline Greb (Lawyer for family law, Hamburg), Laura KleinerMaître en droit, LL.M. (lawyer for family and inheritance law, Berlin) and Dr. Susanna Roßbach (Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg). All three are members of the German Association of Women Lawyers.
When it comes to maintenance, custody, parentage issues or even sexual self-determination, disputes quickly arise - family law affects almost everyone and extends deep into social conflicts. What at first glance seems to be obvious sometimes leads to discussions: who, how and what actually constitutes a family - and who decides that? Whether paternity can be contested more easily, how care work is fairly taken into account in the event of separation and divorce or whether violence in partnerships must also restrict contact with children - family law is currently the subject of intense debate. These debates show how much the law and society's ideas about family are changing.
Based on different demands, it becomes clear that "Who Like What is Family?" is not so easy to answer. That's why Marie-Elisabeth Miersch talks to the guests about why they believe there is a need to adapt family law and what social changes are affecting this area of the law and how.
The conversation will take place at 19:00 at the Stiftung Forum Recht in Leipzig (Universitätsstraße 20). Admission is free. The foundation cordially invites the public to contribute questions. The event is aimed at adults, but children are also welcome. In cooperation with the Deutscher Juristinnenbund e.V. (djb).
"Family law is a mirror of social power relations. As long as care work is devalued and violence is not consistently combated, and as long as queer families are not protected, equality is not realized. The djb advocates for family law that recognizes diversity, creates justice and protects."
