New Training Programme on the Prison System
From November 2024, the Stiftung Forum Recht will be launching its new themed days, which offer in-depth specialist training on law and the rule of law. The first training courses in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe/Bruchsal will focus on the prison system in German prisons.
Karlsruhe/Leipzig. Designed as a one-day, free-of-charge training event, the new Theme days of the Stiftung Forum Recht provide access to complex and often abbreviated topics. During the first two training days, interested parties from the fields of education, social work and journalism will have the opportunity to engage with the prison system, punishment and the administration of criminal justice. The first multiplier day will take place on Friday, November 29, 2024, in cooperation with the Düsseldorf Prison will take place. One week later, on Friday, December 06, 2024, the foundation organizes in cooperation with the Bruchsal Prison the training again for interested parties in the Karlsruhe area.
Topic: Prison system in Germany
At regular intervals, often after shocking crimes, the German public discusses whether court sentences are harsh enough and how offenders should be dealt with. The focus is often on "locking them up", while discussions about the meaning of punishment and resocialization measures take a back seat. However, very few people have ever seen the inside of a prison.
Practical and scientific insights into the prison system
With the Theme days the Stiftung Forum Recht gives interested parties the opportunity to look behind the walls and develop a differentiated perspective in discussion with experts. The day's program for both training courses begins with introductions by prison directors Charlotte Narjes (JVA Düsseldorf), resp. Thomas Weber (Bruchsal Prison) and includes a tour of the prison. In addition Dr. Thomas Galliformer head of the Zeithain and Torgau prisons, will provide insights into his work experience during both training days: Dr. Galli is now a lawyer and public critic of the prison system. In his current book "How we can defeat crime. Ideas for overcoming punishment" (2024), he presents possible alternatives to imprisonment under criminal law.
One-day training courses: Places and talks
From November 2024, the Stiftung Forum Recht will be working with the Theme days is introducing a new training format. The one-day events are aimed specifically at multipliers from the education sector, journalism and social work. They combine a visit to a place associated with law and the rule of law with practical discussions, specialist lectures and workshops. The aim is to provide participants with practical insights and in-depth knowledge so that they can competently explain the topics covered and clear up common misconceptions in their respective activities. Interested parties can register for the training course free of charge at the Stiftung Forum Recht register.
