Symposium: Beyond the Museum – Architecture for a New Way of Living Together
Leipzig. What architectural language is needed to convey the concepts of law and the rule of law? What might adaptable spaces for discourse and participation look like? And how can visitors be involved in the architectural design process to create a sustainable and vibrant place within the urban landscape? These and other questions will be discussed by over 50 scholars, architects, and cultural professionals at the interdisciplinary digital symposium hosted by the Forum Recht Foundation on Thursday, July 14, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The symposium is a continuation of the expert symposia held in 2021 and 2018, the results of which can be found on the foundation’s website.
The idea of what cultural institutions and museums are and can be in the 21st century has changed dramatically in recent years. The participatory mediation and questioning of cultural heritage in a public, accessible and inclusive place has gained in importance. But what does this mean for architecture? The fourth symposium on the establishment of the Forum Recht Foundation will focus on the architecture of the new Forum Recht buildings in Leipzig and Karlsruhe and the question of how the idea for a cultural institution of the future can be shaped. Practical examples from the international mediation and architecture context will be presented in three thematic blocks. The symposium will be recorded in Leipzig and broadcast as a livestream in German, accompanied by a graphic recording.
The symposium will open on July 13, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. with a high-profile public panel discussion on the topic „Intangible Exhibition and Communication: What Does This Mean for Architecture?“ at the Work Lab of Design Offices Leipzig. Henrike Claussen, director of the Forum Recht Foundation, explains the approach: „Law and the rule of law are intangible and only become tangible through their application. This presents us with unique challenges in terms of both methodological and spatial communication. With the buildings of the Forum Recht Foundation, we have the unique opportunity to shape a new type of architecture together with our future visitors.“
