Justice, Literature and Remembrance - Conversation with Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink

The Academy for European Human Rights Protection at the University of Cologne and the Forum Recht Foundation invite you to a joint discussion evening titled „Justice, Literature, and Remembrance“ in Cologne on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at 6:00 p.m.

Karlsruhe/Leipzig/Cologne. The Authors and Lawyers Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink take the major catastrophes of modern German history as the starting point for their latest stories. What contribution does the literary examination of the past make, alongside historical and legal analyses? What moral and political standards must it meet? These questions will be explored in depth during the discussion moderated by author and journalist Géraldine Schwarz.

In his book *The Rat Line* (2021), British-French author and lawyer Philippe Sands chronicles the escape of SS officer Otto Wächter. Drawing on private letters and diaries from the Wächter family, Sands provides insights into the strategic networks of Nazi collaborators. At the same time, the book also explores how Wächter’s life is viewed today from the perspective of his son.

The novella „Die Enkelin“ (2021) by German lawyer and author Bernhard Schlink also centers on an escape—that of a citizen of the GDR. The novel deals with conflicting memories, repressed guilt, and the struggle between different worldviews.

The event will be held in English. Afterward, we invite you to a small reception. Admission is free. Please register at event@stiftung-forum-recht.de
