The Guardians of the Constitution

At the first „Forum Recht im Dialog“ event in 2026, Federal Constitutional Court Justice Martin Eifert was a guest in Leipzig

On Wednesday evening, January 21, 2026, the rooms of the Forum Recht Foundation in Leipzig were packed. As part of the event series „Forum Recht in Dialogue: Insights with Cord Brügmann,“ Prof. Dr. Martin Eifert, a judge on the Federal Constitutional Court, was the guest speaker.

The conversation with Foundation Director Dr. Cord Brügmann focused, among other things, on the 75th anniversary of the Federal Constitutional Court this year. What role does the court play amid dwindling trust in democratic institutions? Prof. Dr. Eifert called on society to develop the ability to resolve conflicts. In court, the focus is on the exchange of rational interests. All parties involved are heard, and judges then attempt to strike the most rational balance of interests possible. However, this requires a willingness on the part of everyone to engage in such an exchange.

In addition to these debates on the philosophy of law, the focus was on daily life at Germany’s highest court for constitutional matters and how the justices handled nearly 5,000 constitutional complaints per year.

Fundamental Rights & Democracy

At the „Forum Recht im Dialog“ after-work and discussion event, following a brief, thought-provoking dialogue, the audience is invited to approach the guests with their own questions. And so, discussions also took place on fundamental rights during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Federal Constitutional Court’s protection against enemies of democracy.

Following the discussion, the guests had the opportunity to talk with one another, network, and enjoy the event organized by the Friends of the Forum Recht Foundation funded, replace the buffet.
