„All state power emanates from the people.“ (Basic Law) But what should one do when a democracy like the Weimar Republic transforms itself into a fascist dictatorship through democratic means? What should one do if, as part of a student movement like that of ’68, I have the feeling and the fear that this process could repeat itself? What should one do if a state like the German Democratic Republic violates its own constitution? Since its founding, the Federal Constitutional Court has overseen compliance with and enforcement of fundamental rights.

But what can I, as a citizen, do today if I feel that the rule of law is not upholding its own laws? How can I tell when this assessment is accurate and when it isn’t? And if it is true, what democratic means do I have at my disposal? What can I do to combat this sense of powerlessness?
