Conditions, Threats, and Forms of Social Cohesion

Introduction to the New FGZ Publication Series

The term „social cohesion“ is on everyone’s lips. Conflicts, crises, and inequalities are seen as threats to cohesion, and political programs unanimously set the goal of strengthening it. But what exactly is meant by „social cohesion“? How can it be scientifically measured or described—and what can policymakers and society learn from it? And how does social cohesion differ across countries and historical periods?

These questions are explored in the new publication series from the Research Institute for Social Cohesion (FGZ), which will be presented this evening. In the first volumes of the series, the editors and authors jointly explore how social cohesion can be studied, what strengthens cohesion at the local level, and what insights can be gained from historical and global comparisons. In doing so, they also focus on current political debates and issues of social cohesion—in Germany and beyond.
