Fishbowl Discussion Marking the 76th Anniversary of the Basic Law: „European Youth Talks: In Justice We Trust?“

To mark the 76th anniversary of the German Basic Law, the European Youth Parliament in Germany e.V., with support from the Forum Recht Foundation, invites you to a public fishbowl discussion titled „European Youth Talks: In Justice We Trust?“ The event will take place on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Theater of the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe.

Karlsruhe. The fishbowl discussion „European Youth Talks: In Justice We Trust?“ on May 23 will focus on the role of constitutional courts in Europe as guardians of fundamental democratic rights: How can their independence be safeguarded as political influence, social polarization, and setbacks to the rule of law on the rise? What reforms are needed at the EU level? And how can courts strengthen fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and the protection of minorities—especially in countries where these rights are under pressure? 

The event is part of the National Selection Session of the European Youth Parliament, which is held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Stephan Harbarth, President of the Federal Constitutional Court, and Minister President Winfried Kretschmann. About 150 young people from all over Europe are participating and will be present for the discussion. Thomas Stelzl, Head of Outreach and Education at the Forum Recht Foundation, will moderate the discussion.

Join experts in a discussion about the reality of Europe’s constitutional system in 2025—including the risks, ideas for reform, and the question of how we can strengthen trust in the justice system. 

The fishbowl discussion will be held in English. Admission is free.

The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Theater at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media (Lorenzstraße 19). Admission is free.
