The rules of soccer and the laws of a constitutional state have quite a lot in common. Both are meant to ensure fairness—on the soccer field and in society. But not everyone always follows the rules; that’s why some fouls result in a red card. How does former professional soccer player and sports journalist Guido Schäfer view this? Is it fair? Should it be possible to discuss decisions in soccer with the referee—and the rulings of a judge as well?

Dr. Cord Brügmann, director of the Forum Recht Foundation, will discuss these and other questions with soccer expert Guido Schäfer on September 17 at 5:30 p.m. during the event „Forum Recht im Dialog: Insights with Cord Brügmann“ at the foundation’s offices in Leipzig.

Afterward, there will be an opportunity to chat with one another, the guests, and members of the Forum Recht Foundation team over drinks.

More About the Guest & the Show

Guido Schäfer is the chief reporter for the Leipziger Volkszeitung and is one of the best-known sports journalists in eastern Germany. Born in Haßloch in 1964, he began his career as a professional soccer player with 1. FSV Mainz 05 before transitioning to journalism after retiring from active play. Schäfer is best known for his incisive writing, his distinctive style—combining wit and depth—and his extensive expertise in soccer. In addition to his work as a journalist, he is also active as a host, podcaster, and author.

At the End of the Workday Since May 21, 2025, the Forum Recht Foundation has been inviting fascinating figures from the judiciary, legal institutions, cultural organizations, and the education sector to give brief presentations several times a year. Together with Dr. Cord Brügmann, the director of the Forum Recht Foundation, they explore a different topic each time that the Foundation is currently addressing: from current legal issues and future trends in law to recent developments at the Forum Recht Foundation and reflections on what it can learn from others. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity to mingle over drinks with one another, the guests, and members of the Forum Recht Foundation team.
