Can a criminal trial ensure that the past does not repeat itself? That the suffering of the victims is acknowledged and recognized? That justice ultimately prevails? Is that its purpose? Is it even possible to address political crimes—committed during war and under dictatorships—through individual criminal law?

This event explores alternative approaches to addressing crimes of this nature. Measures that have so far been known primarily abroad as „coming to terms with the past“ or „transitional justice.“ These measures go beyond criminal law. Are they perhaps more successful for this reason—even if (or perhaps even because) they do not aim solely at legal punishment in the traditional sense? Should they merely punish wrongdoing, or pave the way toward a democratic social order? What role do art, culture, and political education play in this work of coming to terms with the past—which is always, at the same time, work toward the future? And when is this process actually complete?
