Theme Day: Human Rights Protection in Europe
Visit to the European Court of Human Rights AND the Council of Europe in Strasbourg
The First Theme Day of 2025 „Human Rights Protection in Europe“ guides the participants through the Friday, March 28, 2025 to the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
Following a morning discussion with legal professionals working at the court, the afternoon will feature a visit to the Council of Europe, including a workshop segment with expert presentations (by Prof. Dr. Marten Breuer of the University of Konstanz, among others). The workshop will focus on the protection of human rights in Europe and the role of the European Court of Human Rights for Germany.
The theme days are one-day training sessions that combine a visit to a location related to law and the rule of law with practical discussions, expert presentations, and exchanges in a workshop format.
The event is aimed at thought leaders from various fields (e.g., schools, political education, journalism, social organizations, and similar areas). The goal is to provide participants with practical insights and in-depth knowledge so that they can competently discuss the topics covered in their respective fields and dispel misconceptions among their target audiences.
The meeting point on March 28, 2025, is at the Karlsruhe Central Station, South Exit. At 7:15 a.m., we’ll all board the bus together and head to Strasbourg. The training session, including bus transportation, is free of charge; lunch is at your own expense. The return to Karlsruhe is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The number of participants is limited to 25.

- 7:15 a.m. Departure from Karlsruhe Central Station, South Exit
- 9:15 a.m. Arrival at the main entrance of the Human Rights Building
- 9:45 a.m. Film introducing the European Court of Human Rights
- 10:00 a.m. Presentation by a legal expert from the Court’s office on the role and work of the Court, followed by a Q&A session
- 11:30 a.m. Group lunch (at your own expense)
- 1:15 p.m. Arrival at the Palais de l’Europe and tour of the plenary hall of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
- 1:45 p.m. Presentation by Irene Suominen, Public International Law Division and Treaty Office, Council of Europe. Focus: The Council of Europe and Human Rights in Europe
- 2:45 p.m. Lecture by Prof. Dr. Marten Breuer, University of Konstanz: Focus: Human Rights Protection in Europe
- 3:45 p.m. Discussion session and closing remarks, organized by the outreach team of the Forum Recht Foundation
- 4:25 p.m. Departure for Karlsruhe
- Approx. 6:00 p.m. Arrival at Karlsruhe Central Station, South Exit (get-off options as on the outbound trip)

The number of participants is limited to 25.
In the event of high demand, we reserve the right to select participants based on a number of criteria (role as a change agent in the context of political education, representation of various employers or institutions, quantitative gender balance, and regional distribution of participants). We conduct this selection process on an ongoing basis so that we can provide feedback to interested parties as soon as possible after they register.
