Digital Law and Rule of Law Education #2
The webinar for multipliers on October 7, 2026, will introduce the programs and resources offered by the Deutsches Institut für Menschenrechte e.V. (German Institute for Human Rights)
The new virtual training program, „Digital Education on Law and the Rule of Law,“ is aimed at professionals in the fields of education and social services, lawyers interested in teaching these subjects, and others from across Germany who are interested in the topic. In a concise webinar, the Forum Recht Foundation provides a wide range of insights into topics, methods, and materials for effective legal and rule-of-law education and offers an opportunity for questions and discussion.
In the second installment of the webinar, we'll present the work of the German Institute for Human Rights e.V. before. The German Institute for Human Rights is Germany's independent national human rights institution. Its statutory responsibilities include conducting research and providing policy advice to strengthen and protect human rights in Germany. It is funded by the German Bundestag and is accredited to the United Nations.
Another important mission of the institute is human rights education (HRE). This educational approach is described in the 2011 United Nations Declaration. It consistently encompasses the three-pronged approach of education about, through, and for human rights. It is aimed at all people as holders of fundamental and human rights, but also specifically at government officials who are responsible for guaranteeing these rights.
On October 7, we will discuss what human rights education entails in this sense, how it relates to political education, and how it contributes to the „teaching of the law“ with Michael Schwandt, Head of the Human Rights Education Division at the Institute for Human Rights.
About the Speaker
Michael Schwandt is a political scientist specializing in political adult education and has served as director of the Human Rights Education Department at DIMR since May 2023.
Even while pursuing his university studies at the Otto Suhr Institute of Freie Universität Berlin, he was active as a youth and adult educator in the fields of historical and political education and the critical examination of group-based hostility.
His professional career included positions at the IJBS Jagdschloß Glienicke, the Network for Democracy and Courage (NDC), and the Regional Offices for Democracy and Integration (RAA) in Brandenburg. In addition to his work as a trainer, seminar leader, and consultant, his primary areas of focus were quality management, organizational development, and supporting public institutions through change processes.
Michael Schwandt's main areas of focus are political theory, civic participation and democracy, anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism, issues related to rural areas, and education policy.
