Conspiracy Theories

What makes them appealing, especially in times of crisis; what dangers they pose; and what can help people break free from their entanglement.

One phenomenon became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic: In times of personal and societal crisis, some people seek solace by embracing seemingly simple explanations for complex problems—explanations that appear completely irrational to outsiders.

It is important to understand that the societal and individual path out of conspiracy beliefs cannot be achieved solely by correcting the facts. Rather, the psychological and societal mechanisms behind them must be understood and harnessed to help resolve the issue.

We'll be discussing this with:

  • Beate Bube, President of the Baden-Württemberg State Office for the Protection of the Constitution
  • Sandra Kemp, Commissioner for Worldview Issues of the Evangelical Regional Church of Baden
  • Mathieu Coquelin, Director of the Baden-Württemberg Center for Countering Extremism (FEX).

Dr. Björn Appelmann will host the event.

Dr. Sarah Pohl (Director of the Central Counseling Center for Worldview Issues in Baden-Württemberg) will deliver a welcoming address.
