(Dis)Unity – Presentation of the Film Project & Discussion on East German Activism

„(K)Einheit“ presents an exclusive sneak peek at the five-part documentary series „(K)Einheit – How Gen Z Views the East.“ Perspectives on the East are as diverse as Gen Z itself. What still moves this young generation when it comes to the East remains a kaleidoscope of ambivalence. Their sense of connection to their homeland is overshadowed by real-world right-wing structures, yet this young generation’s commitment to democracy is strong—just as strong as their desire to stay in the East. At the same time, many young people are drawn to the former West German states. So are we a (non)unity? Together with the Leipzig-based Foundation for the Peaceful Revolution, we invite you to a discussion with protagonist Tim Sachse and co-project director Lisa Trebs about activism against the far right in East Germany and what this means in the context of the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg.

The five-part documentary is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2024. During the event, an exclusive excerpt on the topic „The Challenge of the East: Between Democratic Engagement and Right-Wing Structures“ will be shown.

The event is part of the traveling exhibition „The monument is…“ The exhibition will take place from June 13 to 30, 2024, at Schlossplatz in Karlsruhe, inviting visitors to engage with the culture of remembrance and memorialization processes in Germany and Eastern Europe through art. The exhibition will feature, among other things, film works by 11 international artists. A dialogue-oriented supporting program complements the exhibition with guided tours, panel discussions, readings, and workshops. The Peaceful Revolution Foundation was founded in Leipzig in 2009 by people from East and West. It sees its mission as conveying the contemporary history of the Peaceful Revolution while building bridges to the present and the future. On behalf of and in cooperation with the City of Leipzig, it is organizing an artistic competition for a monument to freedom and unity. The Peaceful Revolution Foundation places particular importance on a dialogic and participatory process in the creation of this monument. The project is funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Free State of Saxony, and the City of Leipzig.
