Justice, Literature, and Remembrance: A Discussion with Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink

When the past casts its shadow on the present, coming to terms with it becomes a process through which society reaffirms its place. This process takes place not only in historical research and legal debate, but also—and especially—in literature. The most recent works by authors and legal experts Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink address the catastrophes of Germany’s recent past. How can literature contribute to the historical and legal exploration of the past? What moral and political demands must it meet? In this discussion moderated by author and journalist Géraldine Schwarz, these questions will be explored in greater depth.

In his investigative work *The Rat Line* (2021), the British-French writer and legal expert Philippe Sands recounts the story of SS officer Otto Wächter’s escape. Drawing on private letters and diaries written by Wächter’s family, Sands provides insights into the strategic networks of Nazi collaborators. The contemporary interpretation of Wächter’s life from his son’s perspective is also a topic of discussion.

The book *Die Enkelin* (2021) by German legal expert and author Bernhard Schlink also tells the story of an escape—that of a citizen of the GDR. The novel explores conflicting memories, repressed guilt, and the struggle to reconcile different worldviews.
