Our next movie and discussion night: „The Divine Order“ by Petra Volpe (Switzerland 2016, original version)

Nora is a young housewife and mother who lives in a quiet Swiss village with her husband and two sons in 1971. Here, there is little sign of the social upheavals of the ’68 movement. However, the peace of the village and the family begins to falter when Nora starts campaigning for women’s suffrage.

Switzerland was one of the last European countries to adopt the Women's Suffrage at the Federal Level —and did not grant half of its population full civil rights until 1971. We’re using Petra Volpe’s film as an opportunity to take a look across the border to Germany. After all, even in the former Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), women demonstrated in the 1970s against their structural inequality—despite having the right to vote. Who were the pioneers of legal emancipation? What is the state of gender equality today? Was the situation for women in the GDR more equitable? And are legal measures alone sufficient to ensure equality for all genders?

Guest Expert: Verena Meister, Equal Opportunity Officer for the City of Karlsruhe, holds a degree in geography and has been working to advance women’s interests in Karlsruhe since 2018. Prior to that, she served as the full-time Women’s Affairs Officer at Alice Solomon University in Berlin.
