Book Presentation and Panel Discussion: The Flame of Freedom: 1848, 1989 – 2023? Germany Between the Rule of Law, Revolution, and Civil Disobedience

We are using Dr. Jörg Bong’s book, *The Flame of Freedom: The German Revolution of 1848/1849*, published in 2022, as an opportunity to discuss the importance of civic engagement and civil disobedience in a modern constitutional state.

What ideals inspired the revolutionaries in 1848 and 1989? What unites the German revolutions, and what sets them apart? What remains of their commitment? And what can we learn from the historical revolutions in Germany for the present and future of our democracy and our constitutional state? Author Dr. Jörg Bong, Dr. Anselm Hartinger (Director of the Leipzig City History Museum), and Prof. Dr. Katharina Beckemper (Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Leipzig) will discuss these topics.

Moderation: Susann Böttcher (MDR)
