Awards Ceremony for the Writing Contest „The Freedom I Mean“
In cooperation with the “October 3—Germany Sings and Resonates” initiative as part of “Leipzig Reads”

The writing contest „The Freedom I Mean,“ launched in 2022 to mark German Unity Day, is entering its second round. From October 3, 2023, through January 31, 2024, people of all ages were invited to submit essays on the topic of „freedom of conscience” (Article 4, Paragraph 3 of the German Basic Law). With approximately 800 submissions from all over Germany, the contest received an overwhelming response. During the awards ceremony, winners will be honored in the age categories 16 to 26 years (teens and young adults) and over 26 years. A third category was open to secondary school students in Saxony—the federal state from which the Peaceful Revolution largely originated. The event will feature musical performances by the choir of the Leipzig Singschule. Award winners will read excerpts from their works.

Dr. Stephan N. Barthelmess, acting director of the Forum Recht Foundation, is a member of this year’s jury, which will evaluate submissions from all over Germany. The competition offers a total prize fund of 4,500 euros. The Forum Recht Foundation is a partner in the writing competition and will host the awards ceremony.
