Panel Discussion: „A Robust Interim Solution? 75 Years of the Basic Law“
On May 23, 2024, the Basic Law will celebrate its 75th anniversary. This milestone provides an opportunity to invite representatives from the judiciary, academia, politics, and civil society to discuss the Basic Law, its historical development, and the challenges it faces today. Originally created as a provisional measure, the Basic Law quickly gained influence throughout Europe. In the 1970s, Greece, Spain, and Portugal looked to the then-new West German constitution as a model during their transitions to democracy; since reunification in 1990, this constitution has effectively become the constitution of the unified Germany. But what will be the status of the Basic Law’s influence in 2024? How resilient is it in light of the current political situation in Germany—and Europe? Are the Basic Law and the democratic rule of law even in danger? And how must society, politics, and the media anticipate the uncertainties of the future?
