In this commissioned work, created specifically for Europe Day 2023 in Karlsruhe, artist Yves Mettler, in collaboration with French EU lawyer Antoine Bailleux, explores ideas and conceptions of Europe through specific rulings of the European Court of Justice. The narratives and images shaped by these court rulings are diverse. They complement and contradict one another, making it clear that Europe is not a fixed construct, but rather a living entity that can be shaped.
There are a total of nine stations throughout Karlsruhe. One of these can be found at each of the partner institutions: the Forum Recht und Foundation and Franco-German Cultural Center in Karlsruhe. At each station, a podcast based on real-life cases highlights the diverse faces of Europe.
In response to a new order for Europe Day 2023 In Karlsruhe, artist Yves Mettler explores, together with the French legal scholar specializing in EU representative Antoine Bailleux, perceptions of Europe as they are evident in the judgments handed down by the Court of Justice. The accounts and the images shaped by court decisions are diverse and complement one another and contradict each other: Europe does not appear there as a static construct, more vibrant and dynamic.
In total, there are nine stations throughout Karlsruhe. Two of them are located at the project partners' sites: Stiftung Forum Recht et Cultural Center French-German. At each stop, based on a specific example, a podcast sketches one of Europe's many faces.
