This process takes place not only in historical research and legal debate, but also\u2014and especially\u2014in literature. The most recent works by authors and legal experts Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink address the catastrophes of Germany\u2019s recent past. How can literature contribute to the historical and legal exploration of the past? What moral and political demands must it meet? In this discussion moderated by author and journalist G\u00e9raldine Schwarz, these questions will be explored in greater depth.<\/p>\n<p>In his investigative work *The Rat Line* (2021), the British-French writer and legal expert Philippe Sands recounts the story of SS officer Otto W\u00e4chter\u2019s escape. Drawing on private letters and diaries written by W\u00e4chter\u2019s family, Sands provides insights into the strategic networks of Nazi collaborators. The contemporary interpretation of W\u00e4chter\u2019s life from his son\u2019s perspective is also a topic of discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The book *Die Enkelin* (2021) by German legal expert and author Bernhard Schlink also tells the story of an escape\u2014that of a citizen of the GDR.
