In cooperation with the Kinemathek Karlsruhe, we\u2019re embarking on a cinematic exploration of the topic \u201eLAW AND JUSTICE: BETWEEN UTOPIA AND REALITY\u201c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nora is a young housewife and mother who lives in a quiet Swiss village with her husband and two sons in 1971. Here, there is little sign of the social upheavals of the \u201968 movement. However, the peace of the village and the family begins to falter when Nora starts campaigning for women\u2019s suffrage.<\/p>\n

Switzerland was one of the last European countries to adopt the Women's Suffrage at the Federal Level<\/strong> \u2014and did not grant half of its population full civil rights until 1971. We\u2019re using Petra Volpe\u2019s film as an opportunity to take a look across the border to Germany. After all, even in the former Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), women demonstrated in the 1970s against their structural inequality\u2014despite having the right to vote. Who were the pioneers of legal emancipation? What is the state of gender equality today? Was the situation for women in the GDR more equitable? And are legal measures alone sufficient to ensure equality for all genders?<\/p>\n
